Serena Shigar Fort, also known as Fong-Khar (“Palace on the Rock”), is a historic 17th-century fort located in Shigar, Gilgit-Baltistan, Pakistan. Perched on a large boulder, it was originally constructed by Raja Hassan Khan of the Amacha Dynasty. The fort served as the royal residence and a strategic stronghold in the Shigar Valley, which was once an independent kingdom. After centuries of use, the fort fell into disrepair until its restoration by the Aga Khan Cultural Service Pakistan (AKCSP) between 1999 and 2004. The restoration, costing approximately $1.4 million, earned the fort the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award in 2006 for its exemplary conservation efforts.
